All My Cake & What It Cost Me

Small Steps to Big Change

We all have habits we know we should change. But what happens when the cost of keeping them becomes too high? In this deeply personal memoir, I share what happened when inherited habits, avoided choices, and years of telling myself I had time finally caught up with me.

This is not a story about a perfect plan. It is about learning to notice what I was carrying, forgive the person who carried it, and choose the next intentional step.

Change begins when tomorrow runs out.

For years, I told myself I had time. Time to eat differently. Time to take my health seriously. Time to break patterns that felt normal because they had always been there. After a third bout with pancreatitis and a lifetime of unchecked habits catching up with me, that story could no longer protect me from the cost.

All My Cake & What It Cost Me is my reckoning with what I inherited, what I chose, and what I avoided. It is also the story of discovering that real change doesn’t have to arrive in one dramatic act. It can begin with one honest decision made today.

The Turning Point

The hospital forced me to face the truth.

But fear alone could not build a different life. I had tried urgency before. I had made promises, judged myself for failing, and waited for motivation to become permanent.

What began to change me was quieter. I started paying attention to the moment in front of me. I learned that a habit can carry family history without becoming destiny. I learned that forgiveness is not permission to remain unchanged — it is a way to stop spending energy on punishment and use it to move forward.

Four Ideas at the Heart of the Book

These ideas are not separate lessons.

Together, they describe how I learned to see my patterns clearly and make room for a different choice.

Today Moments

Tomorrow was where I stored every good intention. A Today Moment brings the choice back to the only place where I can act: this moment. I do not have to repair an entire life at once — I have to recognize the next choice and make it with intention.

Self-Forgiveness

Shame kept me looking backward. Self-forgiveness helped me tell the truth without turning that truth into a sentence. I can take responsibility for what my choices cost me and still treat myself as someone worth helping.

Inherited Habits

Many of our habits arrive before we know they are habits. Food, comfort, celebration, silence, and coping can pass through a family like a familiar serving spoon. Understanding where a pattern began gives me a better chance to choose what I carry forward.

Mindfulness

Mindfulness gave me enough space to notice the urge, the story around it, and the decision that followed. That pause didn’t make every choice easy—it made the choice visible, and visibility made change possible.

The Practice of Change

Progress over perfection.

Notice

Pay attention without immediately judging what you find. A pattern becomes changeable when I can see the moment, the trigger, and the story I am telling myself.

Choose

Make the next decision small enough to make now. The goal is not a flawless future self — it is one intentional choice that supports the person I am becoming.

Continue

Return after the imperfect day. Progress survives when one choice does not have to carry the weight of every choice that came before it.

“The next intentional step is still a step forward.”

This Book May Be for You If

You recognize yourself in the waiting.

  • You keep telling yourself you will change tomorrow.
  • You recognize that family habits still shape your choices.
  • You are carrying shame about starts, stops, or setbacks.
  • A health warning or life event has made the cost of waiting feel real.
  • You want a compassionate, practical account of progress, not a rigid program or quick fix.

I did not write this book because I mastered change. I wrote it because I had to learn how to begin, return, forgive, and keep going. If you are standing at your own turning point, I hope these pages help you recognize the next step as enough for today.
